A Positive Outlook

I love Z's preschool. It's one of those places that gives you a nice warm feeling when you enter. He has had great teachers and that is so important. Every year the school brings in nurses to test the students' vision and hearing. This year Z was marked as borderline. My heart sank.

At his 5 year check-up, Dr. G recommended we get his eyes examined. Again, my heart sank and my stomach flipped.

Two weeks ago we made it to the eye doctor. He was so excited that I had to show a little enthusiasm too. My heart was not in it, but I did my best for him. Sure enough. We walked out with a prescription for glasses. It made me so sad on the inside. I don't want him to have to deal with any teasing and I of all people know how mean kids can be.

A few days later we went to look at glasses. We ordered a pair that he picked out. Metal in the front, with camo print plastic on the sides. Again, he was thrilled, I was not. However, he joined Team Not Thrilled when he found out it would take 7 to 10 days for the glasses to come in.

Today we got the call. I put A down for a nap while M worked and took off with Z. I didn't tell him where we were going, just that we had an errand to run. When we pulled up I thought he was going to jump out of his skin. "Mommy!!! Are we getting my glasses?!?! Are they made for me?!?!" How could I not be excited? He was radiating! As we walked in, actually, as he pulled me into the store he had the biggest grin on his little face. He is truly thrilled. Me, my heart is still sad for him, but it was even more sad when we walked outside. "Mommy! I can see the building across the street! Look at my camo shoes! I can see them better!!" Ugh. Poor little guy.

So I'm trying to adjust my heart. He is beyond excited and so proud. I'm taking his lead - his little 5 year old lead. Tomorrow will be his first day at school with them. I pray that he gets a positive response from his friends.

Now that's he's been wearing them a few hours I've gotten used to seeing them on his face. I do have to say that he looks cute. :)
